As you walk across the weyr you notice a large group gathered outside of the Infirmary. Your first thought is someone must be seriously hurt, then you remember about Os'mrik and the sparring ring that's set up just outside there. Wondering what would draw a crowd, since the Weyr Weaponsmith and his Master have already had their sevenday bout, you head towards there. You remark to yourself how ironic that the sparring ring should be so near the Infirmary...
"Come on, T'thys! You called for this rematch, so fight already!" The words came from a surprisingly deep voice... surprising because it was from a girl. You recognized the boy as T'thys, a brownrider and Lord Holder's son. You can guess where he was trained. The girl, however is new to you. She has her rustic blonde hair cut very short, and her grey eyes watch the other boy like a hawk. She's rather skinny, but she does have a slight figure. She has a sly grin on her face, and takes her steps and swings with confidence. Your gaze shifts to T'thys, who seems to be tiring, and a grin comes to your face.
"From that look I'd say you're happy he's loosing, so you must know T'thys already. I tell you what, I don't blame you." You realize that Weyrlingmaster J'simo has stepped up beside you, and he smiles slightly, his eyes staying on the spar. "The girl is Jael. Her mother was Jeshra, the former Weyrwoman here. She learned to fight from her father. He'd trained her fairly well until his bronze /betweened/ after Asurath's death. She's a good fighter, isn't she? Take a look at that."
You shift your gaze back to the pair to see T'thys's sword on the ground. Jael is leaning on hers, smiling broadly. She mutters some words to him that earn her a glare, then T'thys stands up and rejoins the crowd. J'simo's voice can then be heard over that of the rest of the audience.. "Alright, the time to watch it over. Everyone'd better get back to their tasks at hand before some of the Wingleaders come along." The crowd realizes who is talking, and slowly begins to disperse. You notice quite a few Candidates and Weyrlings slinking off out of view of their Weyrlingmaster. He grins at their groans, then motions for Jael to come over and join the two of you.
She eyes you carefully as she walks towards you. Her figure has a boxish look to it, and she's obviously strong. She nods her head first to J'simo, then to you. "That was a good spar, Jael. I'm glad you haven't forgotten what A'lant had taught you, nor what I refreshed in your mind during weyrling training.."
"Thank you, Weyrlingmaster. If you don't mind, I have other things to be doing as well." She starts to walk off, and her arm is grabbed by J'simo. She's a brash young woman, and the Weyrlingmaster's grasp seems to remind her of the truth that he out-ranks her, seeing as how she wears the shoulder-knots of a normal dragonrider. She must have grown up with certain liberties, being the daughter of the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader.
"I'd like to show off my best sparring ex-student to visitors, so you can remain with us for a while longer." He turns back to you, a wry smile on his face. "Jael is young, only into her seventh Turn. She doesn't yet realize that wingriders, no matter how good they may be, are still out-ranked by an old Weyrlingmaster like myself."
Jael's face begins to flush at his words, and it seems she's about to stutter out a harsh response when his meaningful gaze falls on her. She bites her lower lip, then looks at you again. A smirk touches her face. "Well, you can't be a wingrider forever. There are other places to reach. Who knows, maybe after I get as old as J'simo I'll be put up as a Weyrlingmaster Second. I'm sure he just can't wait." Her grey eyes shoot him a glance, and it is obvious he's trying to hide a grin. "Now, I wouldn't want to fall behind in my work." Before J'simo can pull her back again she spins on her heel and jogs back in the direction of the Lower Caverns. A bronze firelizard you had not noticed before follows her.
"That girl is worse than a wherry. She'll make perfect friends with Kayan someday." He seems to grimace as he talks, and when he catches your curious look he shakes his head with a smile. "She's been loud, obnoxious, and head-strong ever since becoming a Candidate, and she hasn't gotten better as a dragonrider. That was long before Jeshra and A'lant died. She'd much rather be out sparring and knocking T'thys on his bum than working on her wing formations."
He nods his head to you in a dismissal, and you start to walk away. "Thank Faranth she Impressed, not she's someone else's problem and not mine." You grin at these words, obviously not spoken to you but within your hearing distance. Ignoring the Weyrlingmaster's mumblings, you continue to the next weyr to wait until lessons for the day are over. You duck as a bronze blur flies next to your ear, and you recognize him as the one following Jael around. He flies into the low ceiling of a ground weyr, and you follow close behind.
Walking through the customary dragons cavern, you walk into the weyr. Your assumption that this was Jael's weyr is correct. There is a nicely done portrait of a woman, a man, and their child. Jael is obviously the child from her looks, so you take it that the two handsome parents must have been Jeshra and A'lant. The rest of the weyr is sparcely decorated, as a dragonrider's weyr usually is. The little bronze sits down on the bed and watches you warily. He must have been a gift, though it isn't unusual for the child of the Weyrleaders to have such a pet.
A noise at the entrance startles you, and you duck back outside of the curtain only to come nose-to-nose with a rather large blue dragon. He sniffs at you for a moment and you can almost feel your knees shake with nervousness. Finally, he steps to the side and watches you with whirling eyes as you leave.
You look around the Weyr Bowl, wondering if anyone noticed your hasty retreat. Jael's bronze darts out above your head and disappears. You see the bronze appear out of /between/ and land on a shoulder. Jael seems to have been watching you ever since you entered her weyr. Nodding in your direction as you start to walk off, she turns back to the group with an obvious grin on her face.

Umoth was found during the Turn's End Egg Hunt, therefore he has the number '2000' etched into his wings to welcome in the year. Because of this and the fact that his egg had to be Searched all over Gallimim's pages for it, he is a special Pernese dragon in this Weyr.
