J'simo's Impression Story
Jasimo sat. He just sat. And he looked at the ceiling. There was absolutely nothing, and he meant nothing, to do. He had finished his chores earlier that evening in the Kitchens. Then he had helped H'lcari, the Weyrlingmaster, with the weyrling's lessons. He'd been a Candidate for ten Turns. Ten Turns! He was never going to Impress.
"I'm going to become a weaver. That's a nice job, and there's always a demand for wall hangings." He talked more to the ceiling than anyone. The rest of the Candidates were out doing things. He'd probably be talking to Kayan, but she was busy in the Kitchens. "It's probably as boring as this though."
~*~*~*~*~
"Jasimo! Wake up! You're going to miss the Hatching!" He felt his shoulder shaking and quickly rolled over... and out of the bed. Jumping to his feet he looked around. H'lcari was glaring at him slightly, but he could see a twinkle in the man's eye. "Get moving Candidate, I'll see you as a weyrling before I retire!" The Weyrlingmaster threw his Candidate robe at him and left the boy to himself.
Jasimo was one of the first onto the Sands. He'd thrown on his robe with expert practice, gotten his sandals which were constantly ready under his bed, and had sprinted the short distance to the Hatching Grounds. Now he was breathing deeply. He watched the circle of girls settle around the Queen egg, but he didn't see Kayan there.
Most of the Hatching was a daze. Eggs burst right and left. A bronze had almost walked up to him, and then he angled off towards the boy beside him. Then a brown had come up, looking very regal, and abruptly pushed him aside. Jasimo hardly flinched, ten Turns of Candidacy leaving him cold to the rejection of the dragonets.
Just when it seemed that all the eggs had Hatched, he felt something pull at his shirt. Turning around, he looked down to see...
The Gold. The tiny Queen had her teeth sunk into his clothes, and she wasn't letting go. "Oh no..."
"Jasimo you sharding dimglow! You're not supposed to Impress the Queen! That's a girl's job!" He tried to turn around, but he didn't need to to recognize his half-sister's angry voice. But before he could open his mouth to speak quite a few things happened at once.
Kayan reached out to grab his arm, and the gold released his tunic to snap at her. But the small Queen's growl was cut short but a happy croon. He saw Kayan fall down and wrap her arms around the Queen's neck. He backed off slowly, smiling down at them. "Congratulations sister."
He began to turn from the Sands, a smile on his face despite the feeling in his stomach. 'Good-bye Candidacy, hello 20 Turn-old Weaver Apprentice. Great.'
{{That's not great! Weaver no good. Weyrling better.}}
Jasimo turned around, only to go tripping over a small form that had been following him. Only know did he realize that he had walked to the edge of the Sands with a tiny blue trailing right in his shadow! A large grin spread on his face. ::That sounds like a much better job to me, Talouth.::
{{Good J'simo. Wanna know what sound good to me?}}
::What?::
{{Food. Lotsa it.}}
