Flitter Capades!
Miri sat quietly behind her mother. The egg was shaking quickly now
The eight year old girl watched with wide hazel eyes as her mother
readied the bowl of meat, her arms outstretched for whenever the egg
would decide it wanted to break apart.
The eight year old girl watched with awe, trying to stay out of her
mother's way. The woman would be very upset if her daughter got
in the way of her first firelizard Impressions.
"Mummy! Look! It's breaking!" Miri pointed wildly, her eyes growing
even more. She quickly pushed her messy blonde hair out of her
face. Rima shushed her daughter, grinning wryly and nodding.
"Yes, Miri. It's Hatching. Now you be good. I don't want you to get in
the way here." She gave her daughter a meaningful nudge, but the
young girl took one step back and stopped.
Out of the egg poured a tiny brown firelizard. It tripped on it's wings
creeling pitifully. It's whirling eyes looked at the Master Dolphineer
who held out the food tentatively. Then they turned to the little girl.
Rima gasped as her daughter giggled and pointed. "He likes me!"
"Oh no..." The Master Dolphineer laughed slightly, shaking her head.
How the little holdbrat had managed to catch the flitter's eye she'd
never know. She shoved the food at her daughter, dragging her over
to where the Hatchling lay crooning for food.
Minutes later, the Hatchling was cradled in the child's arms. It was
crooning from his throat in a sound that reminded both of a purring
cat. His eyes were swirling the blue of content.
"So, dear. What are you going to name him?"
The little girl thought for a long moment, then a proud smile
brightened on her face. "I know! I'll call him Daenar, after Da's 'phin.
Isn't that a good idea! What do you think Daenar?" The brown flit
warbled quizically at the girl, succeeding in making her giggle.
A piece of blonde hair fell down from her shoulder. The next thing
either knew the young brown was chomping happily on the string
of blonde hair. "I think he's still hungry, Mummy..."
Daenar was Impressed by Miri from here.
