Q'dyen's Life Story |
"Well, it all started about nineteen Turns ago. Lady Qaelli had just married Lord Holder Yaten. She had her first son, namely... me. From what I've been told I was spoiled rotten, and was rotten myself most of the time. But, by the time I was six I had three sisters, all of whom were much worse than people said I had ever been. However, as the heir mine were the faults that were constantly pointed out. Sounds like fun, eh?"
"Well, I was groomed to be the heir until I was about eleven, by then I'd heard of the dolphins that stayed down by the docks near the Dolphincraft Hall that was not far away. I'd never been there, so it sounded like a good trip for me to take. My uncle, the Steward, took me down there for a day. I completely fell in love with the creatures, and when I got home I told my father that was what I wanted to do with my life. I wasn't quite sure then what a dolphineer did, but I didn't really understand what an heir did either- except that it made the other children happy to be friends with me." He pauses in his narrative to shake his head. "Sad, really..."
"Well, after quite a few days of arguement between mother and father, a decision was made. Mum had wanted to have a daughter first, she believed in a strong female lineage and thought that a daughter Lady Holder would most definitely be a proud symbol Passes from now. Father, however, was determined not to let me go. Mother, being the woman that she is, finally screamed him into it. Literally..." Now he grinned, a proud one at that.
"So, off to the Hall I went. I lasted there for nineteen Turns. There I met Giza." He motioned towards his small feline friend. The feline was curled happily in your lap, enjoying the scratch behind the ears you were giving it. "And Shelia. Shelia was a young dolphin there. She had considered making me her partner, but I guess my attitude just wasn't right for her. She did choose my friend Borden, though, so I wasn't to disappointed." He smiled lightly.
"Well, about a month after that a dragonrider came to the Hall on Search on Jerdan Weyr's behalf. They picked me up, sent a message by flitter to my parents and uncle, then hefted me off to the Weyr. Here I've been for not too long, and I found that waiting to Impress a dragon was a lot more suspenseful than waiting to partener to a dolphin."
"My first Hatching was nerve wracking, and I could have sworn that I wouldn't last. He was the third to last to Hatch, and I thought he'd never come. He tripped over his poor tail, so I went to help him. Our eyes locked... and it was fate. Bronze Migath was mine, and he immediately made it clear that I was his. Forever."
"Weyrling training was hard, but not much more than being an Apprentice dolphineer. Lots of learning, lots of new experiences. Migath scared the wits out me our first time /between/, but it's become a regular occurence after spending so much time ferrying Bay Hold folks for the special occasions such as Hatchings and Gathers. They've turned the senior weyrlings into an escort service, but I survived. Now here I am, a full-fledged rider."
He finishes his story and leans back on his heels, putting his hands on his knees. "So, what do you think?"
You pause for a moment to reflect. It's an interesting story, quite a bit to have happened in nineteen Turns. However, you're not sure what to say beyond that. "Seems you've led an interesting life, young Q'dyen. What do you plan to do now, seeing as how you've graduated?"
He pauses for a moment, then regards you with a sly smile.
"I haven't planned anything yet, we'll just see what happens next."
