Sosi's Living Chamber
Sosi leads you through the curtain into the living chamber beyond. This chamber is lit only by a low fire. "Even the little light that escapes the curtains now is enough to annoy the whers. Their eyes are extremely light sensitive." He walks over to a low table. Only one chair sits at the table, along with a half finished meal. He pushes the meal to one side and pulls the chair back from the table, motioning for you to sit in it. The room is lightly furnished. The bed is covered with thick furs, and you wonder if the darkness of the chamber and only the curtain shielding it from the open and black cavern beyond makes it colder during the nights. He leans back against one of the stone walls, which aren't covering with the usual tapestries that keep out the cold.
"A Wher-keeper needs little, visitor. There's not enough light in here to appreciate beautiful tapestries and baubles, so I let the riders and support staffers have at them." He grins at you again, something he must do a lot when seeing visitors. "I suppose you'll be wanting to hear a bit about me. The dragonriders talk about themselves so often you must be used to hearing life stories." By his voice you can tell he respects the dragonriders, despite his hint that some of them are self-centered. He is still grinning as he talks.
"My parents are both dragonriders. My mother's name is Remira, she's a greenrider. My father is L'mis, a bluerider. I have one brother, and one brother only. His name is L'remi, perhaps you've met him. He's the Weyr Dragonhealer as well as a bronzerider. Quite a lucky boy my young brother is." You can hear the pride in his voice as he smiles for once, instead of grinning. "I became Wher-keeper when I was sixteen. I moved from the Weyr when I was twelve, to help out my uncle who is a cotholder. His only son was about three at the time, and his wife was laden with their second child. Early my sixteenth Turn I returned to the cothold to find that my uncle's queen wher that protected the place had had her 'clutch' Hatch that morning. Most of 'em died, whers aren't the healthiest of creatures though they're strong and sturdy once grown. One of the lil' blues took to me immediately. By the egg, he was a loud little critter! That's how Howler got 'es name."
He smiles, and you two can hear the light snoring of the blue from just beyond the curtain. "I returned to the Weyr and brought Howler with me. Uncle's queen hadn't taken kindly to the little guy, so we thought it best not to stay. When we got back, I seemed to be the only one who took a real liking to the creatures. The former Wher-keeper was an old lady, almost looked like a wher herself. But she was a sweet woman, a nicer lady you'd never meet in your life." He had been smiling fondly, now he turned to you with a grin. "She was an Old Auntie, alright. Once it was decided I'd take her place she began running me ragged. Teaching me how to do this, why I shouldn't do that, more nagging than anyone could stand in a lifetime. I thought I was direly mistaken for thinking her sweet, at first, but I realized soon enough that she just wanted to make sure I did things right."
"Ya see, she was dyin'. She'd been kinda sickly all her life, and her lungs had started givin' out not soon before I came back. She died, and all this was passed onto me, the fellow wher-lover." He crossed his arms now, looking around the quaint little room. He nodded, seemingly lost in his own thoughts. "A nicer woman than Cleora you'll never meet."
He turned back to you with a grin, as if realizing you were there. "Well, stranger. That's about all I think I've got to say about myself. You'll be wantin' to look at the whers now, I guess. Not many can stay around here for long and keep their stomach or their wits. Come along." He held open the thick red curtain and waited until you passed under before following you with the shielded glow.
