Yarrow and Nyalath's weyr
You walk into the low weyr, the starry night closing in behind you. This would probably be the last weyr you'd see for the day. When you enter you here a noise near the back, and continue into the large cavern. The dragon couch is occupied by a rather small green, who watches you calmly as you walk through. You give her a bow, and she nods her head to you in return. Continuing into the weyr, you see a small girl sitting on the end of her bed. Your shoes scuffle on the uneven floor as you walk. "Nyalath? I thought you went to sleep."
She is a tiny, frail creature. Her black hair frames her face and falls to her chin. Her blue eyes sparkle as the runs the brush across the back of the cat. The cat, meanwhile, sits looking quite content. She lifts her narrow face and smiles as she realizes it is not the green who made the noise. "Hello, my name is Yarrow. It is nice to meet you visitor." She doesn't rise, but she extends and a hand to you and you walk over to take it.
You look around her room and notice a few things immediately. Covering one wall is a large star map, completely with a shining white ball on one end and a shooting star on the other. The things in her room are carefully organized, and nothing seems out of place. You look back down to the frail girl and see the cat gone. In it's place is a small blue firelizard. When you begin to wonder what trick is this, the cat mews from the door and departs.
She stands up, and you immediately reach out a hand to help her. She shrugs off your grip, she's stronger than she looks, though still weak. "I'm a Journeywoman Starsmith and a Greenrider, and I am by no means a glass doll that you have to be careful with. I was born this way, and I don't even notice unless points it out to me. It happened because my mother was sick with the wasting disease when she had me. It's rare to dragonriders because of the caution they take, but it is unfortunately very deadly. She hung on for over five years, which is a long time in itself. Because her resistance to disease was already so weakened by the one she had, she somehow passed a few of the side effects onto me though the Masterhealer himself says I will live a long and healthy life as long as I lay off the sweet candies." She lifted her cool blue eyes to look at you with a smile. "My father raised me, and he is very good at it. He's a Master Starsmith, his named is Yaren. My mother's name was Rowe, and she was a greenrider."
Before you can apologize for before, she continues talking. "I Impressed Cassio a few years back. He is probably the most orny blue firelizard I have ever met, almost worse than that black feline Vega. Not to mention he has the simpley terrible habit of thinking my new distance-viewer a decent perch." The blue firelizard chirps curiously where he now sits on top of the telescope in the corner, and Yarrow darts a glance at him. "Yes you. And don't give me that hungry feeling, I know I can't be hungry yet and you just ate." The firelizard chirps pitifully and she laughs.
"I'm sorry to say I'll probably stay in this first level weyr for all of my life as a dragonrider. Father insisted I not be moved, though they wanted to put a Candidate here. At least this way that painting won't go to waist. A bluerider named R'nyx painted it there for me. Nice of him, wasn't it?" She brushes her hands off on her pants and begins to lead you back towards the front of the weyr. "I'd be out on the StarStones, but Nyalath insisted we come back. She didn't want me walking down the steps alone and she wanted to go sleep." She smiles as the two of you pass the sleeping green on the dragon couch.
"I became a Candidate a long while ago. I'd always wanted to be one, but Jeshra, the old Weyrwoman, had been afraid for my health. I went into the Starsmithcraft because it was the only other thing I ever truly loved. It was my other way of getting to the sky I guess." Her voice echoes many years of yearning for flight it seems, and you look at her to see a slight sadness in her eyes. Then she smiles, looking up to you and blinking her tired eyes. "One of the visiting blues from SouthSeas Weyr was visiting a while back, and he and his rider slowly began to drive Kayan mad with their constant nagging. Finally she let me be a Candidate. I was surprised, because despite any arguement to Jeshra she would never let me. She was a friend of my mother's though, so I think Kayan understood me more than Jeshra. It paid off though. I Impressed Nyalath, and here I am."
"When she got old enough, Nya began to fly me up to the StarStones. It saved me a lot of energy and was a lot faster than walking. Because of my progress I was named Weyr Starsmith, more or less to compensate I think." She smiles wryly and begins to walk away across the Weyr Bowl. "I do hope you don't mind, but I need to be leaving now. I haven't had dinner yet, and Kayan will likely skin me if she finds out I'm neglecting myself. You might want to check into the Lower Caverns for a night, it's getting rather late." She begins to turn away but stops, sucking in her breath. You turn to see what she is staring at. Belior sits along the rim of the Weyr Bowl, glowing brightly. You stare at the moon for a moment and turn back to see Yarrow still staring.
After a few moments she shakes her head, smiling. "That was the view I love. It probably looks much better from the Star Stones, but I doubt I have the strength to see it tonight. Tomorrow though." She smiles, nodding her head to you as she begins to walk away. "Take care traveller, and perhaps you'll find the strength to come and visit me again now that I'm flying the skies instead of only staring at them." With a final smile she turns and walks away, a blue firelizard landing on her shoulder.
